Anyone who translates all the lyrics from Madonna’s “Like a prayer” album at the tender age of eleven, using an ancient school dictionary, must have a soft spot for languages … That was certainly the case for me, and I consider myself very lucky to have turned this passion into my job. To me, understanding languages means understanding people and their diverse backgrounds. Working with languages helps create communication and connection where there might have been silence. Every language, every topic opens up a door to a journey of discovery, and I feel immensely privileged to learn and explore something new with each assignment.

Law
Communicating accurately.

Sarah King is accredited by the European Patent Office (EPO) and regularly interprets at opposition and appeal proceedings. In addition to a sound knowledge of patent terminology, this requires a good understanding of various technical fields such as pharmacology, wind turbines, industrial and electrical engineering. Sarah also works as a legal translator for the EPO.

Sarah King has been interpreting in court for many years, including at the District Courts in Düsseldorf, Bonn, Cologne, Munich and Mannheim and the Higher Regional Courts in Düsseldorf and Cologne. Both clients and judges value her expertise in civil court proceedings involving patent infringement, injunctions, competition law, contract law and company law, as well as in criminal law contexts, most recently in cum-ex proceedings. For law firms, Sarah is one of the first choices for consecutive or simultaneous interpreting of depositions under US law, examinations under Canadian law and international arbitrations.

What our clients say
"As a patent law firm, it is of primary importance to us that our suppliers provide precise and consistent work and ensure confidentiality. For many years now I have been relying on Ms King in these matters, who excels not only in terms of expertise and dependability but also in terms of her always obliging and flexible manner. I greatly appreciate these qualities and look forward to continuing our trusted collaboration with Ms King in the future."

Lisa Eiden, Head of Translation, ABP Burger Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, Munich

"As a former tutor at TH Köln/University of Applied Sciences, I’ve known Sarah for many years. I am delighted to say that she is now a highly valued member of the interpreting team at the European Patent Office. Sarah is always thoroughly prepared, polite and professional and has a solid and comprehensive grasp of legal and technical English. Her voice is lively and pleasant to listen to. As an experienced interpreter with a background in depositions and infringement proceedings, Sarah remains calm and reliable even in highly demanding situations."

Stephen Conn, university tutor, assessor and senior interpreter at the European Patent Office (EPO), Munich

"I value Ms King as a reliable, always thoroughly-prepared and highly professional colleague who is easy to work with. She's one of my go-to contacts for jobs in the Cologne region. Clients have always commented on the excellent quality of her interpretation."

Science & Research
Making a difference.

Sarah King has been working as an interpreter in medical and neurobiological science and research for many years, including board, staff and faculty meetings. Please contact me for specific references.

What our clients say
"I have had the pleasure of assigning Sarah King to the booth (simultaneous) and stage/meeting room (consecutive) several times over the years - also working together on multiple occasions - during assignments for major clients in the field of science and research. She consistently comes excellently prepared for any challenge, even if exceptionally difficult or technical, as is often the case in the sciences. Clients are highly appreciative of her courteous and professional manner and she has the rare ability to connect with specialist audiences "using their language". Thank you, Sarah, for being the perfect colleague!"

Karin Walker, organising interpreter, Bonn

"We often see medical translations that are ambiguous or erroneous – which is why it is so gratifying when one finds such a competent and reliable partner as yourself. Many thanks for your good work."

Culture
Conveying nuances.

Interpreting in the domain of art and culture requires a particular sense of subtleties and nuances, a versatile register and a fine feel for what is expressed – literally and figuratively. For many years, Sarah King has been interpreting events at literature festivals, panel discussions as well as art project and book presentations, counting lit.COLOGNE and the city library of Cologne among her satisfied customers, while Katharina Schmid has been interpreting for the film and media industry during press conferences at the Berlinale, for Hollywood stars and at book and film launches.

What our clients say
"Interpreting requires extraordinary linguistic talent and a complex technique. Sarah King has elevated her profession to an art, to which raving audiences at the various events at Stadtbibliothek Köln keep bearing witness."

Judith Petzold, Management Team of Stadtbibliothek Köln (Cologne City Library)

"I have long been amazed by the challenges faced by the on-the-spot translator, a person who must reinvent the diction and semantics of one language into another without time for hesitation or pondering. Because my comprehension of German is far more developed than my ability to speak German, I have found myself in a position to judge the varying abilities of my interpreters over the years. I can say unequivocally that there is no one better at this formidable task than Sarah King. How she does it I cannot say, but when I listen to her German from my English, I find myself astounded by the fact that she misses nothing and never makes a mistake. Sarah King’s abilities are, quite simply, miraculous."
